Our Platform
Workers Deserve MoreAdapted for Boston DSA
Preamble
Today, working people have few good options. In most political races, the choice is between far-right Republicans and corporate do-nothing democrats. In both cases, workers lose, and our politicians continue to support the corporate class that bought them over the people who supported them. Under this status quo, inequality will continue to worsen, corporations will continue to sell war and wreak havoc on the environment, and the worst impacts of these crises will be felt by the poor, people of color, and working people generally.
Even in Boston, one of the wealthiest cities in the country, Mayor Wu calls for fiscal responsibility as classrooms lose teachers to belt-tightening and students to ICE terrorism. Across the state, Democratic politicians pass tax cuts for the rich while hospitals are shut down, school districts are threatened with budget cuts, and our infrastructure falls apart.
It doesn’t have to be this way—the tides are shifting. Across the country, working-class Americans are bucking the status quo and supporting candidates like Zohran Mamdani. The working class is making clear that we will have power over our lives. We will build a government and economy by and for the working class.
Neither major party is capable of advancing a positive program that meets the needs of the people. That’s why the Boston Democratic Socialists of America, a local of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is leading an alternative course of action. In our local program, “Workers Deserve More,” adapted from DSA’s national platform, we hope to bring together the people of the greater Boston area to fight for a true democracy where working people have control over their own lives, their government, and the economy.
Workers deserve more, and we will fight like hell to make that vision a reality.
We fight for...
Thriving Working Class CommunitiesMassHealth for All
Whether it’s Medicare for All nationally or MassHealth for All in Massachusetts, all workers deserve universal healthcare with no premiums, co-pays, or deductibles, with guarantees for reproductive and gender-affirming care.
Ending the War on Drugs
Local politicians have, for too long, used the war on drugs to target and punish the poor, multi-racial working-class communities of Massachusetts. Drug use must be treated as a health issue, not a criminal one. We must decriminalize drugs, expand health clinics and safe injection sites, demilitarize our police forces, and build up nonviolent community safety programs.
College for All
No person should be denied an education based on their income or zipcode. All public higher education in Massachusetts must be made tuition-free with cost-free room and board, along with the cancellation of all student debt.
Housing for All
Housing should be treated as a necessity, not a commodity. Massachusetts needs to invest in quality public social housing developments, pass a guaranteed right to counsel for tenants, and establish universal rent control.
Childcare for All
Our families build our futures. It shouldn’t be a financial nightmare to raise children in Massachusetts. The state must provide generous paid family leave of at least 12 months for all workers as well as free universal childcare and pre-K.
Fast and Free T
Mobility should not be a luxury. Public transportation should be treated as a free public good that connects our communities and expands opportunities for working people.
We fight for...
An Economy for the Working ClassUnions for All
Workers are the engine of the world, creating all wealth. Every worker, regardless of trade or skill level, should have the right to strike, form a union, and join a union. We must repeal the ban on public sector strikes, pass “just cause” firing protections, and expand funding for union apprenticeship programs. City and state agencies should only contract with companies that refuse to union-bust.
32-Hour Work Week
As workers become more productive, all workers deserve a 32-hour work week with no reduction in pay or benefits.
Green New Deal
For too long, utility companies like Eversource and National Grid have steered the lackluster climate policy of Massachusetts. We must have massive public investment to transition away from fossil fuels toward a green and sustainable economy. We must fully fund the MBTA for fast and free public transit, massively expand green infrastructure and jobs programs, and demand public ownership over our transportation and energy infrastructure.
Tax the Rich
When Massachusetts voters passed the millionaires tax in 2022, Gov. Healey and State House leadership quickly cut taxes elsewhere to keep the 1% happy. Billionaires and CEOs don’t make the economy run—workers do. We must establish a wealth tax for the wealthiest in Massachusetts and raise taxes on the richest earners, corporations, large inheritances, and private schools and universities.
We fight for...
No War at Home, No War AbroadFree Palestine
Massachusetts must firmly say: Free Palestine. State and local leadership must advocate for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, an end to military and economic aid to Israel, and commit to the boycotting, divesting, and sanctioning of companies complicit in Israel’s occupation, apartheid, and genocide against Palestinians.
End the U.S. War Machine
The US spends trillions yearly on U.S. military and imperial objectives. We must slash the U.S. military budget, close overseas bases, bring troops home, and invest in the social, economic, and physical infrastructure for a thriving people-first United States.
No More Economic Warfare
The US must end economic sanctions that impact the sovereignty of countries whose governments act independently of the United States, such as Cuba, Venezuela, and Iran. In Massachusetts, politicians should reject all attempts to punish individuals and organizations for participating in boycotts and political speech.
Free People, Abolish ICE
ICE has become a modern-day Gestapo. Existing as a tool to repress political dissidents and advance the white nationalist agenda, abolishing ICE is the moderate position. Massachusetts and its municipalities must end all collaboration with ICE and data-tracking companies that support ICE. Nationally, we must demilitarize the border, end all immigrant detention and deportations, provide immediate amnesty to all immigrants regardless of immigration status, and provide immigrants equal access to jobs, labor rights, and social services.
We fight for...
Working-Class DemocracyUniversal Suffrage
In Massachusetts—and across the US—we must extend full voting rights to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals and allow same-day voter registration. We must expand voting rights to noncitizens, establish statehood for Washington D.C., and allow self-determination for all US territories.
A Representative State Legislature
Bankrolled by corporate lobbyists and wealthy donors, Massachusetts has one of the least productive and least transparent legislatures in the nation. We must overturn Citizens United nationally, ban corporate and high-dollar donations from the wealthy few, implement stipend reform at the State Legislature, and move the US and Massachusetts towards a multi-party democracy through publicly financed, proportionally representative elections.
Popular Vote for President
Massachusetts must stay party to the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote for President. Massachusetts electeds at all levels must advocate for such a change.
Reduce the Power of the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court’s power of judicial review allows an unelected body to effectively create and abolish laws outside of the legislative process. We must limit this power and implement term limits to create a more responsive judiciary.
