Public Comment Training
Public Comment Training
May 6, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
CCTV, 438 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge MA, 02139
When policy makers take input from the public, it's often in the format of short speeches at a meeting. In Cambridge, for instance, there is time allocated at the beginning of each regular City Council meeting for residents to comment on any of the agenda items. Showing up to speak on policies under consideration can be a powerful form of advocacy, and developing your skills and confidence with speaking in this format can make the process easier and more effective.
Presenter Vick Mohanka is Director of Sierra Club Massachusetts, and has over 10 years of professional experience holding public hearings as government staff and as an advocate at the state and local level on a variety of issues including topics like labor rights and climate policy. Join us to learn some tips and tricks to prepare a persuasive public comment, and practice to speak on an issue that matters to you.

Winning Public Power: Lessons from New York
Winning Public Power: Lessons from New York
May 16, 2026 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Online
Join the Boston DSA Ecosocialist Working Group on zoom in welcoming organizers from NYC DSA who helped win a major public power victory in New York State. Hear how they built a winning campaign by passing the Build Public Renewables Act (BPRA) and how we can apply those lessons to fight for public power in Massachusetts.
We’ll be joined by the following organizers from NYC DSA:
Susan Kang is an associate professor of political science and a 9 year member of NYC DSA. She was involved in some of the direct actions in support of the BPRA and worked to get union support for the BPRA before its passing. In addition, she is currently engaged in academic research looking at the policing of protest, especially climate direct action, across borders.
Andrea Guinn is a designer and NYC-DSA member who organized for the Build Public Renewables Act from its launch in 2019 through its passage in 2023. She was involved across the campaign in various roles, from field organizing and campaign strategy to communications. She works for the United Auto Workers and remains passionate about an ecosocialist future.
Devin McManus is a 9 year member of NYC-DSA and was the campaign manager of David Alexis’s 2022 State Senate campaign against Kevin Parker, chair of the NY State Senate committee on energy and telecommunications. Devin was also the Data Director for the Zohran for NYC Mayoral campaign and currently works in the NYC Mayor’s office.
Patrick Robbins is an organizer and strategist who has served as the chair of capital district DSA and has been a part of New York City’s Ecosocialist Working Group since 2017. He was a part of the campaign for public power in New York from the very beginning, working on drafting bill language, onboarding new members, lobbying and political strategy, and implementation after the bill’s passage. He is a fellow at the Climate and Community Institute and works currently at Spring Street Climate Fund. He was born and raised in Brooklyn.

May 17, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Discussion Questions for Ch 4:
-
What is one of the first strategies colonialism uses to disarm the struggle for a nation? What contradiction prevents this strategy from working?
-
What is the importance of the existence of national culture? What does Fanon say to those who say that national culture isn’t important?
-
What is the cultural and psychological attitude of colonialism towards natives? How does this manifest? What problems does this lead to when natives and native intellectuals want to cultivate a national culture? How does the attitude of native intellectuals towards national culture evolve?
-
How does national culture relate to continental culture? How does national and continental culture in Africa relate to culture in the United States?
-
How does national culture relate to decolonization? What qualities must it have? What happens to the “culture” if it lacks these qualities?

Boston DSA 2026 Local Convention
Boston DSA 2026 Local Convention
May 23, 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Center for the Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Avenue 1-C, Somerville MA, 02143
Boston DSA’s Annual Local Convention is where the membership of the chapter puts our collective vision of participatory democracy into practice. We make the most important decisions and conduct the most important business for the chapter’s upcoming year at Convention, including appointing the new Coordinating Committee and Harassment and Grievance Officers, hearing in-depth report backs on the chapter’s activities in the past year, and updating our chapter’s bylaws. But it’s not all procedural wrangling! After the business portion is concluded, we’ll have an all-member social to put the social in socialism.
Voting for chapterwide offices will open after the candidate forum on Monday, May 11 (RSVP: bdsa.us/CandidateForum). At Convention, there will be a candidate meet-and-greet, and voting will close after intermission. Candidate statements were emailed to members on Saturday, April 25, so check your email to see who’s running!
Much of the afternoon will be devoted to debate blocks. The initial compendium of proposals was emailed out to all members on Saturday, April 25; members should expect the full convention packet, with all amendments and the full agenda, in their inbox by May 13. In addition, our outgoing Treasurer and Membership Coordinators will present their annual reports.
Our keynote speaker will be our endorsed State House candidate Evan McKay, and there may be some other very special guest speakers in the works!
While the business portion of Convention is for chapter members, the social from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is open to your DSA-curious friends and non-DSA partners. The social will feature a beer and wine cash bar, courtesy of the hospitality of the Center for Arts at the Armory. Dinner and snacks will be provided, and our party planning committee is hard at work cooking up a revolutionarily good playlist for dancing.
So join us, either in person or via Zoom, Saturday, May 23rd from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Boston DSA’s Annual Local Convention, at Somerville Arts at the Armory, 191 Highland Avenue in Somerville. We hope to see you there!
