Abolitionist History Walking Tour: In Commemoration of Anthony Burns
Abolitionist History Walking Tour: In Commemoration of Anthony Burns
June 2, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm Outside the John Adams Courthouse, Pemberton Square, Boston MA, 02108
This event is a history walking tour from the courthouse where Anthony Burns was detained, down the path he was escorted by federal marshals, to the end of Long Wharf where he was deported back into enslavement in Virginia.
On June 2nd, 1854, federal marshals deported Anthony Burns from Boston to Virginia. He was born enslaved there but had risked his life to escape to the free state of Massachusetts as an adult. He had started a new life in the Black community of Boston and was working humbly when one day he was kidnapped by federal slavecatchers. The Fugitive Slave Act had recently passed, granting the federal government the of use terrifying new powers to kidnap and enslave Black Americans, even against personal liberty laws passed in free states like Massachusetts. The organizing of the abolitionist community of Boston to the Fugitive Slave Act and the detainment of Anthony Burns can offer today’s immigrant justice activists powerful insights on how to organize communities against a tyrannical federal government tearing apart local communities.
The tour will end on Long Wharf, with a brief ceremony to commemorate the 172th anniversary of Burns’ deportation. The full itinerary of the tour will be sent to guests 48 hours before the tour. The tour is led by a Boston Public Schools teacher and Democratic Socialists of America organizer.
As part of the commemoration, attendees are asked to bring and carry a small stone for the duration of the tour and to drop the stone into Boston harbor at the end of the ceremony.

What misconceptions about mental disorders does Fanon attack? How might these misconceptions make it harder to understand and treat these cases?
Consider the series of cases. What patterns do the cases within the same series exhibit?
What patterns are common among the native cases?
What patterns are common among the European cases?
Which psychological symptoms seem to be intentionally or directly inflicted, and which seem to be unintentionally or indirectly inflicted? Who tend to be the recipients of intentional psychological trauma, and who tend to be the recipients of unintentional psychological trauma?
What do cases across series have in common? What does this tell us about the psychological and cultural effects of colonialism?
How does Fanon engage and treat each of these patients in his interviews with them? What does this tell us about Fanon and the constraints under which he was working?

June 28, 2026 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm Community Church Boston, 565 Boylston St, Boston MA, 02116
Public Rail Now is a coalition of workers, activists, and organizers calling for public ownership and operation of the U.S. rail system. They are hosting a panel discussion in Boston on Sunday June 28 at the Community Church of Boston from 1 to 3 pm.
The goal to bring together organizations in the community to help connect the everyday experiences and struggles of working people to the larger fight against corporate power and greed on a national scale. Some of the subjects addressed at the event include:
How will the continued corporate consolidation of the railroads, such as the proposed Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger, impact workers, passengers, and trackside communities?
How can we push back against the robber barons and the crooks in the Trump administration?
What can workers and communities do to fight privatization of public services like Amtrak, USPS, and the MBTA?
How can we fight back against job cuts, and other attacks on working people?
How could public ownership improve New England's rail network?
What would an alternative rail system, one that serves the public and puts people before profit, look like?
For more information about Public Rail Now, please visit publicrailnow.org.
This is a non-DSA community event being promoted by the Labor Working Group.
