Exploratory Committee on a New Party
Exploratory Committee on a New Party
September 17, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
A link to attend this virtual event will be emailed upon RSVP
Earlier this month, the Boston DSA Coordinating Committee unanimously voted to create the Exploratory Committee on a New Party. The goal is to investigate and understand the challenges and opportunities for socialists in Massachusetts to run independent campaigns from the Democrats, given our state's particular political, geographical, organizational situation.
We can take this committee in whatever direction we wish and don't have to be limited to an electoral perspective on what it might mean to be a socialist party in 2025, but for starters there are three areas we would like to investigate:
- It's often said that the "win number" (the number of votes needed) for general elections is too high for Boston DSA's electoral machine to win state legislature general elections, so we should limit ourselves to contesting primaries which have a smaller electorate. Is this true? What are these numbers? Has our capacity grown enough to change this picture since we first decided this in 2018-2019?,
- What are the requirements to form a state party line? What would be needed to e.g. run an agitational independent socialist candidate for Lt. Governor, and is it feasible?,
- What strategies are available to us to pressure the state Democratic party into ceding a future socialist party the districts where we're the strongest, for example by threatening to run spoiler candidates in swing districts like Labour did in the UK against the Liberal Democrats?,
Whether you're a new member or one of our seasoned cadres, if you're interested in the party question we want your help! Please join us for this initial meeting. You can also stay in touch by filling out this interest form!
