Ecosocialism Reading Group: "Slow Down" - Meeting #4
Ecosocialism Reading Group: "Slow Down" - Meeting #4
January 10, 2025 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Online
Join us for the fourth meeting of our reading group series on Kohei Saito's "Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto". We will be discussing Chapters 7 & 8 and the Conclusion. All are welcome to attend, even if you weren't at the other meetings!
This meeting will be hybrid - in person in Somerville near Porter Square and on Zoom. Please RSVP for the in-person address.
The book is available for purchase here or potentially through your local library.
Book summary from the publisher:
"Why, in our affluent society, do so many people live in poverty, without access to health care, working multiple jobs and are nevertheless unable to make ends meet, with no future prospects, while the planet is burning?
In his international bestseller, Kohei Saito argues that while unfettered capitalism is often blamed for inequality and climate change, subsequent calls for “sustainable growth” and a “Green New Deal” are a dangerous compromise. Capitalism creates artificial scarcity by pursuing profit based on the value of products rather than their usefulness and by putting perpetual growth above all else. It is therefore impossible to reverse climate change in a capitalist society—more: the system that caused the problem in the first place cannot be an integral part of the solution.
Instead, Saito advocates for degrowth and deceleration, which he conceives as the slowing of economic activity through the democratic reform of labor and production. In practical terms, he argues for:
- the end of mass production and mass consumption
- decarbonization through shorter working hours
- the prioritization of essential labor over corporate profits
By returning to a system of social ownership, he argues, we can restore abundance and focus on those activities that are essential for human life, effectively reversing climate change and saving the planet."

Cambridge DSA January Monthly Meeting
Cambridge DSA January Monthly Meeting
January 11, 2025 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
CCTV Studios, 438 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA, 02139
Join us at CCTV studios, 438 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge for the first meeting of 2025!
The working group has two exciting campaigns in progress that you can dive into - Let Cambridge Choose & Tax Harvard!
The Let Cambridge Choose campaign is a ballot question petition to reform of the Cambridge City Charter which seeks to replace the unelected, unaccountable City Manager government with an elected executive.
Tax Harvard campaign seeks to pressure both Harvard & City Manager as negotiations between the parties for another 20 year term agreement are happening right now behind closed doors while our communities are being shut out and Harvard PILOTs (or payments-in-lieu of taxes) to the city are only $4.5million/yr.
We will do campaign updates and deep-dives on both and give you ways to get involved and start making a difference!
If you're interested in the Cambridge Working Group but can't make it, you can still get involved by filling out our member survey.

January 19, 2025 @ 9:30 am - 5:00 pm
Roxbury Community College Media Arts Center, 1234 Columbus Avenue, Roxbury Crossing MA, 02130
In coalition with other local groups on the Left, the purpose of this conference is to bring together a mass movement and situate ourselves in our political reality of repression in the US and genocide in Gaza and creeping annexation in the West Bank. We must work in alliance to build a society based on solidarity, peace and justice. Our work, based here in Massachusetts, will be shaped by national and international developments. We are holding this conference before the inauguration so we can prepare for the crises we will face after January 20.

PEWG January 2025 Meeting
PEWG January 2025 Meeting
January 23, 2025 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
zoom, zoom, 02138
Location: TBD + zoom
Boston DSA's Political Education Working Group meets on the fourth or last Thursday of every month at 7 pm, unless we have to move it for a holiday, which happens more often than you'd think.
PEWG's goal is to provide our members with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to organize effectively and strategically, and to educate the wider public on DSA's vision for a socialist future and the often-erased leftist movements of the past. PEWG hosts a number of ongoing projects, such as the chapter's political education blog (bostonpewg.org), our Socialist Night School series, and periodic New Member Reading Groups (abcsofsocialism@gmail.com).
We also run one-time (or a-few-times) events such as reading groups, lectures, and panel discussions; and work with other working groups in the chapter to run political education events related to their areas of organization.
Working group meetings and events always have a zoom option if you cant make it in person. You can find our meeting's Zoom link or join the working group's mailing list at https://actionnetwork.org/forms/join-the-political-education-working-group?source=direct_link&
